What the source record says
Address: 5400 Prosperity Dr NW, Huntsville, AL. Coordinates are approximate for Cummings Research Park area. Original 2.5M sq ft campus operational; expansion to 3.5M sq ft paused December 2022 for AI architecture redesign; Meta stated no intent to abandon site. Over 85 grants and $4.2M in sponsorships to Huntsville-area schools since 2019. Meta's stated investment rose to more than $1.5B with the June 2022 expansion (original 2018 build ~$750M); the 3.5M-sq-ft expansion was later paused for AI redesign, so the ultimately realized figure is uncertain. Alabama's standard data-center abatement (Chapter 9B) likely applies, but no dollar figure was found in public sources. STATUS RE-CHECK, NO CHANGE - operational is correct and the record's cited source is being misread. The 'expansion next to be stopped amid AI pivot' story dates from December 2022, not from the present, and what it describes is a TEMPORARY CONSTRUCTION PAUSE OF A PORTION of the expansion pending a redesign - Meta explicitly did not cancel the project (unlike its Denmark site). The campus itself broke ground in 2018 and has been operating since 2021; Meta's current info sheet still describes operational buildings there. Operating campus and paused expansion phase are two different things, and this record tracks the campus. Recommend keeping status operational and recording the 2022 partial-expansion pause as statusHistory context rather than a status change. I found no source published after 2022 stating the paused portion has either resumed or been cancelled, so that phase's present state is genuinely unresolved.
Any MW value is reproduced as source-reported context. Its measurement boundary is not established consistently enough for comparison. Unknown is not zero.
